High School Reunion
As you made your way across the room, you heard your name. It was faint because the music was loud, but you heard it. When you turned around, you gasped and almost dropped your glass. You instantly recognized him.
He used to sit behind you in your senior history class. He always made you laugh whenever the teacher would turn around to write something on the board. He'd pass you little notes with a funny caricature sketch of the teacher. You'd laugh and hope you wouldn't get caught. There were a few close calls, but thankfully it never happened. Fast forward to now. There he was, all grown up. You almost didn't recognize him without his glasses. You both hugged when you met again. He explained that he got LASIK and felt a lot better afterwards. He was always losing his glasses and now he doesn't have to worry about that anymore. You thought he looked cute with them before, but now that you saw him, as an adult, you got a new found admiration for him. He said he published a few graphic novels that were humorous takes on washed up superheroes. You were impressed and intrigued. You were proud of him using his talents. He asked about you and you mentioned that you were a residential interior designer and that your job took you all over the world. He looked intrigued as well. As the night progressed and more guests arrived, you all mingled together reminiscing among different cliques of friends.
It was a memorable evening and you thought to yourself that you're glad you chose to come. You noticed that he was walking towards you. You weren't sure if you were going to see him again, but apparently he was headed to the valet station, where you were headed too. You smiled as did he when he got near you. As you both went outside, you noticed it had rained. You loved rain and it felt like a good omen.
Just then, he asked you what your plans were for the rest of the evening. You felt a chill of excitement and you mentioned that you were heading to your hotel. It turns out you're both staying at the same one. You couldn't believe those odds. He asked if you'd like to hang out at the hotel bar for a nightcap and catch up. You liked that idea. After the valet gave you your keys, he tipped him before you had the chance to do it. You looked over at him and he smiled and said, it was the least he could do to thank you for being a cool classmate. You smiled and laughed because you thought it was cute and a little bit corny. He laughed too, because that was his intention. You hugged him and said see you in a bit. He smiled and waved as you drove off. You noticed he got his car shortly after yours. As you drove along the coast, you were so happy. You couldn't believe how good he looked. He was probably thinking about your changes too. Your skin cleared up and you didn't have your braces. Those things really built your character, you thought to yourself. You felt a little attracted to him as you thought about your first interaction after all these years. You're so happy you booked the hotel for the night. It was a 3 hour drive from where you live and it was more comfortable that way. Now it felt serendipitous. When you arrived and walked past the hotel lobby towards the bar, you could hear faint piano music. It made you feel cozy. He arrived a few minutes after you and sat next to you at the bar.
That night you both caught up on your lives and he confessed that he had a huge crush on you during high school. You were shocked because you never would've guessed that. In retrospect, it did clarify some of his awkward behavior around you back then. He turned out to be so sweet and kind. You just felt it as you both spent time together. It eventually got pretty late and you two and one other couple were the only ones at the bar. You both decided to call it a night, but not before exchanging information. It turns out he lives an hour away from where you live, but in the other direction. You both took the elevator together. Your floor was under his. You two were alone and when you got to your floor, you turned to hug him. It became an embrace, and you welcomed it. He kissed your cheek and you closed your eyes and smiled. You both then said good night to each other as you exited the elevator. He was still smiling and looking a little bashful as the doors closed. After you changed and got into bed, you started thinking about what happened tonight and it felt exciting. A new chapter of your life was unfolding. It felt special because you felt so comfortable around him. It was as if no time had passed. Just then you got a text. It was from him sending you a "good night" text along with the "🌙" emoji. You thought that was sweet and you replied with "good night ✨". That night you dreamt about him. It was the most comfortable sleep you had in a long time. That morning you didn't see each other. You got some coffee and a croissant to go and then head over to your car.
As you drove home, time flew because the view was beautiful, the music was good and your thoughts about him were blissful. You couldn't believe you were thinking about him like that. After a few days, you both planned a first date. That date led to another one and another one. After about 3 months you two were inseparable. It turns out that you both were perfect for each other. In metaphysical circles, one would say "soulmates". You balanced each other and had similar experiences leading to this point. You both never felt the same with anyone else. Together you were effortless. The first night you spent together, you were at a coastal resort for a weekend getaway.
It was interesting and mine blowing. You couldn't believe this was your same classmate from so long ago. It was inevitable that you were meant to be together...just think what would've happened if you chose to skip the reunion! ✨
